Statement on the passing of President Carter

Fairfax County Democratic Committee Chair Aaron Yohai released the following statement:

“The Fairfax County Democratic Committee mourns the death of former President Jimmy Carter. With his passing, the world has lost an icon of peace and justice, and a great man.

“President Carter dedicated his life to public service, first as a naval officer and then as a governor, as President of the United States, and in post-presidency as an advocate, diplomat, and philanthropist. He used his global platform to speak out against war and injustice, to help those in need, and to bring attention to the plight of the poor and marginalized. Reese Espy-Glassman was appointed by President Carter to monitor elections in Liberia. She said, “President Carter was a champion for the poor and marginalize people. He truly cared about fostering democracy and human rights.”(see below)

“President Carter’s legacy will live on in the hearts of millions of people around the world who have been inspired by his courage and touched by his generosity. We honor his memory and thank him for his service to our country.”

In 2002, Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in promoting peace and human rights, and for his efforts to findpeaceful solutions to international conflict. He has also been actively involved in several charitable initiatives, including the Carter Center, which he founded in 1982 to promote global health, democracy, and human rights.He has also been a major figure in the fight against neglected tropical diseases and has worked tirelessly to ensure access to safe drinking water for millions of people around the world.

Inthe years since his presidency,Carter has continued to work for peace and justice, and his tireless efforts have been recognized by numerous awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the Congressional Gold Medal. His work as anex-president has served as a model for others to follow, and his commitment to justice and human rights will continue to be an inspiration to many.

Reese Espy-Glassman of The Blueview was appointed by President Carter to be an official government observer for the Liberian elections representing the Carter Center. She taught International Law at American University, Legislative Affairs, International Law, American Foreign Policy, and Constitutional Law at Morehouse College and Spelman College. She was the Director of the Committee on International Relations in the U.S. House of Representatives.
